  5.      This  information  is  prepared  by  the Radio Society of Great
  6. Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2  metre  bands
  7. by stations in all parts of the country.

  11.      This  is  the  GB2RS  news  broadcast  for  the week commencing
  12. Sunday, 3rd August.

  16. SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
  17. ------------------
  18.  
  19.      There was almost no  change  in  solar  parameters  during  the
  20. period  21st  -  27th  July,  although there was a slight decline in
  21. ionospheric levels. The sunspot count returned  to  zero  after  the
  22. 23rd.  Solar  flux levels fell back to around 70 units, which is the
  23. average figure for the last 6 months.
  24.      The geomagnetic A index averaged 8 units and  it  has  been  at
  25. quiet  levels  for  the last 10 weeks or so. Occasional days such as
  26. the 25th produced unsettled  levels  around  15  units;  these  were
  27. balanced by very quiet days such as the 21st and 24th. On those days
  28. the levels were only 4 and 5 units.
  29.      Sporadic  E  levels are now lower than they have been, although
  30. it was still reported for an hour or two on most days in the  south.
  31. Spread  F  appeared  during some darkness hours, mainly for northern
  32. stations. The INDA index for the period 14th - 21st July was quiet.

  35. IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
  36. ----------------------------------
  37.  
  38.      The F2 critical frequency daily high fell from  an  average  of
  39. 6MHz  down to 5.4MHz. It is now clear that in the course of the past
  40. year the general decline has been around 1MHz. A reasonable  pattern
  41. is  beginning  to  appear;  this  shows that heliographic longitudes
  42. between 140 and 50 degrees produce the best ionospheric results  and
  43. higher  F2  levels  than  at  other  times. On this basis the lowest
  44. levels are between 330 and 270 degrees. Occasional random days  also
  45. produce poor results. The darkness hour lows are now falling slowly,
  46. and  the  average  for the period was 2.9MHz. Part of the reason for
  47. this fall is the seasonal changes.

  50. IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
  51. -----------------------------------------------

  53.      Data from South  Uist  is  available  again  after  the  recent
  54. equipment  failures.  During the period 18th - 27th July there was a
  55. decline in both the daily highs and  the  darkness  hour  lows.  The
  56. daily  highs averaged 5MHz, varying between 4.7MHz and 5.6MHz. It is
  57. difficult to see  any  pattern  on  the  solar  rotation  base  map;
  58. variations in the northern part of the UK seem random, whereas clear
  59. patterns are emerging further south. The darkness hour lows averaged
  60. 2.4MHz,  varying between 3.2MHz on the 20th, and 1.8MHz on the 27th.
  61. Spread F is now appearing on some days, and  this  is  resulting  in
  62. poorer conditions.

  65. SOLAR FORECAST
  66. --------------
  67.  
  68.      The  only  active  region  at  present  on  the sun crossed the
  69. central meridian yesterday (2nd August). A few sub-flares may result
  70. although very little can be expected of them. Solar flux levels  are
  71. expected  to  remain  at  around  70  units. The geomagnetic A index
  72. should  remain  at  around  the  quiet  or  just  unsettled   level.
  73. Ionospheric  levels  may  increase  slightly  this week; however the
  74. daily highs are not expected to exceed 6MHz in the south and  5.5MHz
  75. in the north.
  76.  
  77.      The  main  Perseids  meteor shower takes place between the 10th
  78. and 14th of August, peaking at about 20 hours on the 12th.

  82.      The annual RSGB national mobile rally takes place on Sunday 3rd
  83. August, at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.
  84.      The rally will open at 10am and  will  feature  a  large  trade
  85. exhibition,  RSGB  bookstall  and  membership  services stand, and a
  86. members' mart. Tables in the members' mart will be available  hourly
  87. on  a  first-come  first-served  basis.  No tables will be available
  88. before 10am.
  89.      The rally takes place next to the coach park  and  entrance  is
  90. free. However there is a charge (1 pound 50 per car) for entrance to
  91. the  grounds  of  Woburn  park  - which has many attractions for the
  92. whole family. The rally will be well signposted and talk-in will  be
  93. provided on 2 metres and 70 centimetres by the Dunstable Downs radio
  94. club.

  97.      The  Rolls-Royce  amateur  radio club's mobile rally also takes
  98. place on 3rd August. It will be held at the Rolls-Royce  sports  and
  99. social club in Barnoldswick, and will open at 11am.
  100.      The  rally  will  feature all the usual attractions including a
  101. bring and buy stall and instant raffle.  Refreshments  are  provided
  102. and  admission  is free. There is ample car parking. Talk-in will be
  103. provided on S22 by G3RR.

  106. LATEST MORSE TEST NEWS.

  109.      Here is a list of Morse test centres currently taking  bookings
  110. for  August, test date first, then the test centre, then the date by
  111. which applications must be received  at  RSGB  HQ.  Places  will  be
  112. allocated strictly on a first-come first-served basis.

  162. SATELLITE NEWS.

  165.      The  Japanese  amateur  radio  satellite  JAS-1  is  due  to be
  166. launched at 2030 UTC  on  Thursday  7th  August.  AMSAT-UK  will  be
  167. holding pre-launch nets on 3780kHz at 7pm local time each evening up
  168. to the launch.
  169.      The Thursday net will commence at 2000GMT - 9pm local time, and
  170. Ron  Broadbent  G3AAJ will have a direct link with the University of
  171. Surrey  which  is  a  secondary  command  station  for  JAS-1.  More
  172. information  from Ron on the evening nets or by writing to AMSAT-UK,
  173. London. E12 5EQ.

  177.      On the 4th of May 4 VHF repeaters - GB3BM,  GB3MH,  GB3PW,  and
  178. GB3VT  changed channel to resolve a number of interference problems.
  179. This change has proved to be  extremely  successful.  Some  6  weeks
  180. prior  to  the change, each of the repeater groups was informed of a
  181. scheme to be administered by the RSGB whereby those  who  needed  to
  182. replace  crystals  could  have  the cost re-imbursed in exchange for
  183. their old crystals.
  184.      Although all the repeater groups were notified of  this  scheme
  185. some  4  months  ago it appears that some repeater group members are
  186. still unaware  of  it.  Anyone  in  those  areas  wishing  to  claim
  187. replacement crystal costs should note that claim forms are available
  188. from  the  Repeater  Management  Group. The contact address is:- c/o

  214.      GB2RI  -  this callsign has been issued for a DXpedition to the
  215. island of Rockall in mid August. No further details are available at
  216. present - updates will be given via the RSGB Headline  News  Service

  220.      GB2TLS - on 8th, 9th, 10th  August  from  the  Leeds  Show,  at
  221. Roundhay. The station will operate on HF and VHF and is being run by
  222. the White Rose ARC.

  224.      GB2MRI - for the Ballymena ARC's operation from Rathlin Island,
  225. between  6th  and  10th  August.  Operation  will  be on HF, 144 and
  226. 430MHz, including fast scan television. Rathlin Island's locator  is
  227. IO65VH, and it includes a number of tasty WAB squares. A special QSL
  228. card will be issued via the contact man GI3FFF.

  230.      GB0OHM, GB2OHM, GB4OHM, GB1OHM and GB6OHM - all run by the West
  231. Bromwich  Central  Radio  Club  throughout  August for the Oak House
  232. Museum. Awards will be available, and details can be  obtained  from
